Another successful day is drawing to a close at the Trento Festival of Economics. During the morning, the event kicking off the third day was the conference titled “Energy, industry, environment: the strategic triangle of the Mediterranean”. It took place at Sala Falconetto in Palazzo Geremia, and among several guests, the Vice-Chair Committee on Industry, Research and Energy at European Parliament Patrizia Toia, was present. The discussion focused on the future of renewable sources, trade logistics, and transport systems. On the same morning, the Nobel Laureate in Economics Joseph Stiglitz spoke about “Capitalism in need of reforms” from Teatro Sociale, warned his audience about the dangers caused by the current system we live in, ranging from social inequalities to climate change - also addressing the solution through what he calls progressive capitalism.

At noon two critical debates took place: the first one was with Minister of Culture Gennaro Sangiuliano, who spoke at the event “Culture and economic development” at Sala Marangonerie (Buonconsiglio Castle): here, the focus was placed on the importance of promoting the cultural sector, and what role the private sector can play. The second debate developed at Sala Depero in Palazzo della Provincia, where the Minister for Relations with Parliament Luca Ciriana, together with Maurizio Fugatti, the President of the autonomous province of Trento, and Arno Kompatscher, the President of the autonomous province of Bolzano shared their view on “States, autonomies and NRRP”. Minister Ciriana addressed the topic of institutional reforms with great openness: local autonomies must be strengthened, creating a system where everybody is contributing. President Fugatti considered: “Some specific tasks must return to the original competencies of the autonomous provinces, as we have already pointed out to the government. This is a special time for Trentino: there are issues, such as that of large carnivores and environmental protection, for which our goal is a completely independent management”. President Kompatscher, on the other hand, recalled the long and challenging path leading to the implementation of South Tyrolean Autonomy. “We are in favour of a differentiated autonomy: if it is managed well, autonomy benefits not only the territory involved but also the entire country system. The more you let us work this way, the more we can contribute”.

The afternoon saw contributions directed mainly to the education sector, with the event “The Italian school today and tomorrow”, which took place in Filarmonica and to which Minister of Education and Merit Giuseppe Valditare participated; and, at Sala Depero in Palazzo della Provincia, “University and research, factory of the future” where the Minister of University and Research Anna Maria Bernini was present. However, economics in the narrow sense has also been touched, with Adolfo Urso, Minister of Enterprise and Made in Italy, dealing with “Why an industrial policy is needed” from the stage of Teatro Sociale.
