Political Economics of the Refugee Migration

In the face of the global humanitarian crisis, Europe is experience a flow of refugees without precedent. Christian Dustmann, Economics professor at the University College London, has highlighted answers can stem from retracing previous movements by refugees in an attempt to avoid repeating the same political mistakes.

Dustmann underlined potential political and economic consequences of this migration at the Economics Festival in Trento on Friday June 3, 2016 in relation to the future of growth for the European Union in light of the current refugee crisis.  The European Union, and its member states, are bound by the Geneva Convention for accepting refugees, all with the long term encouragement of assimilation and nationalization of refugees.

Potential political actions to promote growth in Europe are seen through "resettlement of refugees, the establishment of relocation mechanisms, recoordination of economic access, and equal labor opportunities."

Dustmann highlights the problem lies with the lack of coordination and cooperation on countries' sovereignty over who is allowed to live and work in each country; but this is vital to enforce such actions.
